More Minerals, Please: Why We Love Jane Iredale"

Liz Belford

We’ve become increasingly aware of the importance of knowing exactly what we’re eating and where it came from. Organic, farm to table, free range…we like to know that the food we ingest is healthy, wholesome, and not drenched in pesticides. We pay attention to ingredients, avoiding additives we know to be bad for us. We strive, as best we can, to nourish ourselves while steering clear of the harmful substances and practices that threaten the food industry.

Shouldn’t we be equally as particular about our makeup and hygiene products? We rub it into our pores and use it to conceal sensitive (and even sometimes irritable or inflamed) areas. Oughtn’t we to pay as much attention to our makeup ingredients as we do to the things we eat?

Here at Rosewater Spa of Oakville, we believe the answer is yes. And so does Jane Iredale, one of our favourite lines of skincare products.

Jane Iredale, founder of the eponymous company, was inspired by her career in the entertainment industry to develop a line of skin-healthy makeup; again and again, she saw actors and models struggling with heavy makeups that wreaked havoc on their skin. In 1994 she founded Iredale Mineral Cosmetics and became the first to supply the aesthetic industry with a line of makeup that actually had a positive impact on the epidermis.

Today Jane Iredale uses the highest quality ingredients and has even earned the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation, an honour bestowed only when a company can prove, with scientific data, that its products safely aid in protecting skin from the harmful effects of the sun. They’re also non-comedogenic, allergy tested, anti-irritant, and where preservatives are required, only natural preservatives (and never parabens) are added.

The company focuses on the “power of three”: a mineral base, a hydration spray, and an applicator or brush. Its mineral foundations come in the form of pressed or loose powder. At Rosewater, we love them not just for their ingredients, but how they perform. There’s a science behind it; high quality minerals interact with light, which is what creates the brand’s signature soft focus effect.

Jane Iredale’s line of foundations offers a wide variety of finishes––velvety, luminescent, sheer, full coverage. The pure mineral pigment and lack of fillers (like talc) means that these products have serious lasting power and won’t demand hourly touch-ups.

For those who always find themselves pressed for time in the morning and like to keep their beauty regimen to a minimum, several Jane Iredale products are multi-taskers and boast four-in-one benefits. The Amazing Base, PurePressed Base, Glow Time, and Dream Tint all function as foundation, concealer, sunscreen, and skincare provider.

Another fun fact: Jane Iredale minerals resist many of the ordinary annoyances of cosmetics. Because these minerals bind together upon application, they are resistant to smudging, smearing, or creasing as the day wears on.

We are thrilled to share that we recently introduced Jane Iredale lipsticks to our Boutique. The Triple Luxe Long Lasting Naturally Moist Lipstick™ offer a creamy, matte finish and comes in fifteen shades. (And we adore their sleek rose gold cases with magnetic enclosure––it’s such a lovely detail.) They contain a blend of antioxidant rich Moringa Oil, which nourishes the lips, as well as waxes and oils, which soften and infuse plenty of moisture. Tahitian vanilla and blackberry make these subtly sweet and fragrant. Basically, these lipsticks provide the simultaneous benefits of a lipstick and lip balm.

To learn more about the brand or to purchase a product from the Jane Iredale line, be sure to visit the Rosewater Boutique at 156 Church Street, Oakville.

I don’t know if it’s just me. Shortly after Thanksgiving I began to sense a mild vibration around me. At first, I’m never certain what it’s about but then it all comes flooding back…it’s time to start thinking about finding the perfect Christmas gift for my family and friends. On the one hand, it’s kind of fun. On the other hand, it becomes ever more challenging to find the solution that’s just right for everyone on the list. I am the kind of person who takes the time to think about what might be perfect and completely personal. And, now that most of the people on my docket have all of the stuff they’ll ever need (and more) my creative skills and imagination must come into play!

Among the many challenges extended isolation had during COVID was the strain placed on couples cooped up for months on end. Regardless of the strength of a relationship enforced togetherness can create stress. This has left couples searching for a way to rekindle the celebration of being with one another. Couples are missing “experiences”, they are missing travel time together, missing fun in the sun on a tropical beach, missing time abroad … missing sharing new experiences together as a couple. Romantic time together and dates! Couples who present a “united front” can move through tough times by reframing problems as obstacles to tackle together.* One such couple is Vicki and George Fiddler who for 15 years have been loyal patrons of the Rosewater Spa. Their united front has been a commitment to the benefits and enjoyment of couples massage.

I have a favour to ask of you. It’s a safe assumption that each of you knows someone who has been touched by cancer. While remarkable progress has been made in prevention and treatment, cancer continues to infiltrate the lives of too many women - young and old. When I created Rosewater Spa I made a commitment to myself that this business would always give back to the community and among the causes I support cancer is one of the areas where we can make a real difference in the lives of women undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. I know so many women, who ring the bell at the conclusion of their treatment and are then faced with an expectation from others that life now will return to ‘normal’. I also know from so many women that this just isn’t so. Most of them are advised that recovering from radiation and/or chemotherapy will require up to 12 months and even then there can be lingering effects.
