Give the Gift of Beauty, Health & Wellness

Liz Belford

Give the Gift of Beauty, Health, & Wellness There was a time, not so long ago, when an orange at the bottom of a Christmas stocking felt as precious as rare treasure. The sweet fruit was expensive and hard to come by in northern climes; it was a special gift for a special occasion, a coveted treat in the wintery month of December.

Today, of course, oranges can be found in virtually every grocery store year-round. For most of us, they no longer represent a delicacy. I would argue that the same can be said for most things these days; the things we need or want are generally a short drive or even the click of a button away.

The result of this changing consumerist landscape has also, of course, changed the nature of gift-giving. The desire (or perhaps the pressure!) to bestow gifts upon our loved ones is the same, but as we all surround ourselves with more and more stuff, it becomes increasingly hard to give gifts that are truly needed –– or even truly wanted. And then there are environmental factors to consider; the demand for material goods is putting increasing strain on our planet. Why, then, do we continue to spend exorbitant amounts of money around the holidays and let the stress of shopping eclipse the real joys of the season?

A few years ago, I decided to change my gift-giving practices. I truly believe that giving something experiential is the best way to show love and appreciation for the important people in our lives. These gifts will never need to be returned because they’re aren’t the right size or colour. The recipient won’t ever need to stress about making a special trip to the mall to exchange them. And most importantly, they won’t be worn or used once and then promptly be forgotten about.

A gift certificate to the Rosewater Spa of Oakville is essentially the gift of time. Life is hectic; we so rarely set aside time for ourselves to relax, rejuvenate, and focus on our minds and bodies. A gift certificate for the services at our award-winning spa is a creative, thoughtful way to show family members, friends, and employees that you care about their mental and physical well-being. It’s a gesture of appreciation, one that says: you are valued and your happiness is important to me. You are deserving of time and space to focus on your body, your mind, and your spirit.

Here’s a little hint for those on the hunt for the perfect present for a spouse: give the gift of time together! Our Suite Experiences are perfect for those couples in search of dates a little more creative (and romantic!) than the classic dinner-and-a-movie. Our Rendezvous for Two experience includes side-by-side massages in our VIP Suite and a steam in the adjacent private grotto. This package also includes bubbly and decadent chocolate truffles.

Our Retreat for Two suite experience begins with a detoxifying eucalyptus steam session and destressing side-by-side massages in the VIP Suite. A delicious, leisurely lunch is then served in the privacy of the Suite, and afterwards, couples enjoy Signature Spa Pedicures together.

Another hint: these services aren’t just for couples! Looking for something for a friend you rarely get to see? Carve out a day or afternoon together with either of these special Suite Experiences. It’s the perfect opportunity to catch up in a serene, soothing environment and let the unnecessary stress of the holiday season fall away.

Whether you’re looking to get more creative, thoughtful, or environmentally friendly with your gift-giving this season, consider a gift certificate to the Rosewater Spa of Oakville. I don’t know if it’s just me. Shortly after Thanksgiving I began to sense a mild vibration around me. At first, I’m never certain what it’s about but then it all comes flooding back…it’s time to start thinking about finding the perfect Christmas gift for my family and friends. On the one hand, it’s kind of fun. On the other hand, it becomes ever more challenging to find the solution that’s just right for everyone on the list. I am the kind of person who takes the time to think about what might be perfect and completely personal. And, now that most of the people on my docket have all of the stuff they’ll ever need (and more) my creative skills and imagination must come into play!

Among the many challenges extended isolation had during COVID was the strain placed on couples cooped up for months on end. Regardless of the strength of a relationship enforced togetherness can create stress. This has left couples searching for a way to rekindle the celebration of being with one another. Couples are missing “experiences”, they are missing travel time together, missing fun in the sun on a tropical beach, missing time abroad … missing sharing new experiences together as a couple. Romantic time together and dates! Couples who present a “united front” can move through tough times by reframing problems as obstacles to tackle together.* One such couple is Vicki and George Fiddler who for 15 years have been loyal patrons of the Rosewater Spa. Their united front has been a commitment to the benefits and enjoyment of couples massage.

I have a favour to ask of you. It’s a safe assumption that each of you knows someone who has been touched by cancer. While remarkable progress has been made in prevention and treatment, cancer continues to infiltrate the lives of too many women - young and old. When I created Rosewater Spa I made a commitment to myself that this business would always give back to the community and among the causes I support cancer is one of the areas where we can make a real difference in the lives of women undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. I know so many women, who ring the bell at the conclusion of their treatment and are then faced with an expectation from others that life now will return to ‘normal’. I also know from so many women that this just isn’t so. Most of them are advised that recovering from radiation and/or chemotherapy will require up to 12 months and even then there can be lingering effects.
