Dear Valued Guests,

It is with great pleasure that I reach out as Rosewater Spa of Oakville begins a new chapter.

First and foremost, I want to acknowledge the incredible work that has gone into building The Rosewater Spa into the respected, trusted, and calming sanctuary it is today. Liz’s leadership over the past 25 years stands as a true testament to her dedication and commitment to creating a space where health, rest, and wellness are at the heart of every experience. Our community has been truly fortunate to see her vision come to life.

I am honoured to continue this legacy and to work alongside you in upholding the same exceptional standard of service and personal care that Liz and her remarkable team have provided over the years.

This transition feels especially natural, as Liz and I have shared a long-standing professional relationship. Many of you may recall when Rosewater Spa Burlington was located beside The Grace Clinic in Burlington, where our teams often collaborated in supporting client wellness and care. I am deeply grateful to build upon that trusted foundation.

Looking ahead, our vision is to thoughtfully evolve Rosewater Spa of Oakville into a destination that beautifully blends Spa, Wellness, and Retail here in Oakville. We remain committed to maintaining the warmth, expertise, and excellence you’ve come to expect, while also welcoming your thoughts and feedback as we grow together.

I am announcing a bittersweet milestone: after nearly 26 years of nurturing and building relationships with our amazing clients, I am thrilled to share the news that Rosewater has been sold as I now step into my next chapter.

It has been an honour to provide an oasis of relaxation & wellness, and I am deeply grateful to every client, partner, and team member who has been part of this incredible journey.

The Healing PowerOf Couples Massage

Among the many challenges extended isolation had during COVID was the strain placed on couples cooped up for months on end. Regardless of the strength of a relationship enforced togetherness can create stress. This has left couples searching for a way to rekindle the celebration of being with one another.

Couples are missing “experiences”, they are missing travel time together, missing fun in the sun on a tropical beach, missing time abroad … missing sharing new experiences together as a couple. Romantic time together and dates!

Couples who present a “united front” can move through tough times by reframing problems as obstacles to tackle together.*

One such couple is Vicki and George Fiddler who for 15 years have been loyal patrons of the Rosewater Spa. Their united front has been a commitment to the benefits and enjoyment of couples massage.

Since its founding in the year 2000, Rosewater Spa Of Oakville has been an oasis of calmness and according to Vicki “a place of positive energy.”

As a yoga teacher, Vicki understands the mind/body relationship and observed that from her experience their is a growing awareness of how massage can contribute positively to an overall feeling of wellness.

Both Fiddlers commented that they on occasion have friends question them about why they so enjoy the couples massage. “I think they imagine that we spend our 80 minutes chatting about what’s happening in our lives and so on,” said George. “It couldn’t be further from the truth. We enjoy the solitude of the moment and the experience of doing something beneficial together. I highly recommend it but do make sure to book the 80-minute massage. The shorter time just doesn’t cut if for me!”

“Ultimately our perspective is that we deserve this,” Vicki declared. “We make a day of it and it’s a beautiful way for us to enjoy each other’s company and take advantage of the many wonderful restaurants, stores and features of downtown Oakville. We both really love Rosewater and have no hesitation in recommending that people enjoy the wonderful service that Liz offers.”

I have a favour to ask of you.

It’s a safe assumption that each of you knows someone who has been touched by cancer. While remarkable progress has been made in prevention and treatment, cancer continues to infiltrate the lives of too many women - young and old.

When I created Rosewater Spa I made a commitment to myself that this business would always give back to the community and among the causes I support cancer is one of the areas where we can make a real difference in the lives of women undergoing radiation and chemotherapy.

I know so many women, who ring the bell at the conclusion of their treatment and are then faced with an expectation from others that life now will return to ‘normal’.

I also know from so many women that this just isn’t so. Most of them are advised that recovering from radiation and/or chemotherapy will require up to 12 months and even then there can be lingering effects.

All of this can create considerable stress in the life of a cancer survivor and while there’s no scientific evidence that managing stress improves the chances of cancer survival we do know that using effective coping strategies can greatly improve quality of life.

And that’s just part of the reason we created our program ‘Put the Roses Back in Your Cheeks’. This unique and completely complimentary program revolves around helping recovering cancer patients feel better. It’s one of the best kept secrets in Oakville and I want to change that.

What Humans Have Known For Centuries: Healing Matters

It’s been such a joy to see our clients, old and new, back in the spa. The energy that is created from reconnection is so fulfilling and we’re delighted to be able to offer our services to you again.

It’s made such a difference to emerge from the pandemic and experience again the real healing that arises from re-engagement. Witnessing this took me back down memory lane to the time when I was criss-crossing the globe before opening Rosewater and pursuing my quest to learn best practises in the spa business.

That time afforded me the benefit of learning how different cultures have distinct approaches to well-being while at the same time acknowledging that a common theme is the interconnectedness of mind-body-spirit in healing.

Many traditional healing systems emphasize body and breathing in maintaining well-being. In India there are healing practices that feature regular massage with body oils, yoga, and pranayama also known as breathing techniques for maintaining balance.

Spa treatments however extend far beyond massage and include many types of therapeutic services that have been popular for centuries. Europe is dotted with great spas where entire towns sprung up revolving entirely around healing.

Among the most famous are Baden-Baden, Vichy and Bath.

Baden-Baden, situated on the western outskirts of Germany’s Black Forest, is one of the most important spa centres in Europe. Bathing in Baden-Baden is a tradition dating back to Roman Antiquity. It was founded in 80 A.D. by the Romans.

Located in Bourbonnais, France on the banks of the river Allier, the waters of Vichy have been in use since Antiquity. The ‘queen of spa towns’ is still world-known for its thermal and tourist activities.

And, in the United Kingdom, Bath has been a place of healing for over two thousand years.

My point is that for centuries humans have acknowledged the role that non-traditional practices can play in creating a full, healthy and rewarding life.

And, if you ever have the opportunity to visit one of these great European spas it will be an experience you won’t forget. I had the opportunity to visit the Friedrichsbad Spa in Baden-Baden on two occasions. How remarkable it was to enjoy the real treatment ceremony. Beyond the wonderful culinary experience of visiting Germany in white asparagus season and a day trip to enjoy the foie gras in Strasbourg, it was the spa that formed the highlight of my trips.

Upon its opening in 1877, this temple of well-being was recognized as being the most modern bathing establishment in Europe. The relaxing and enjoyable experience that is unique to the Friedrichsbad is a result of the changing sequence of warm and hot dry-air baths, a soap & brush massage, steam baths of varying intensity and a selection of thermal pools along with thermal water showers. In fact you experience 17 bathing stations as you progress through the spa!

Acknowledging that Oakville is unlikely to become a UNESCO World Heritage Centre such as these towns, Rosewater can claim some historical relevance as the only spa in Oakville that features genuine Vichy treatments!

On the massage front, some feel that it is only a feel-good way to indulge yourself. To the contrary, massage can be a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health and well-being, whether you have a specific health condition or are just looking for another stress reliever.*

Finally, now that we’re emerging from the isolation of the past many months so many people are craving the simple pleasures and sometimes that may make services such as facials, manicures and pedicures appear purely indulgent. I can assure they are not. The therapeutic benefit of human engagement and human touch are clearly established as methods by which we prove that healing matters .

Emerging From Languishing

It has been a reflective period of time in all of our lives and my heart is filled with incredible gratitude as we approach reopening the spa on July 2. We can't wait to welcome you back and want to express how much your support and encouragement has meant to all of us over these past months. It's made all the difference and we thank you immensely.

Sometimes I like to start my day with a cup of tea (our own Rosewater blend of course!) and the online New York Times. I find it calming and informative. Occasionally this special ‘me time’ includes coming upon some real inspiration.

This happened back in April when I read an interesting piece by Adam Grant, an organizational psychologist at Wharton. The article was entitled There’s a Name for the Blah You’re Feeling: It’s Called Languishing.*

Grant wrote, “Languishing is a sense of stagnation and emptiness. It feels as if you’re muddling through your days, looking at your life through a foggy windshield. And it might be the dominant emotion of 2021.”

It sure made a lot of sense to me as I reflected on the past year and the challenges we’ve all faced. I began to reflect on the realities of life that so many of our Rosewater clients faced. The working parent dealing with remote learning, having her partner working away in the basement office all while keeping her own business above water. The professional learning an entirely new way of operating their enterprise while ensuring their clients received the support they needed.

So much time spent caring for others and letting their own self-care needs become eroded simply out of practicality and devotion.

Did you know that, according to Dan Kelly, president of the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses that in terms of simple business closures, we have experienced probably the longest lockdown in North America, and possibly the world?**

While planning for our reopening we made a conscious decision to help people begin to re-prioritize self-care. To offer our full range of healing spa services so they could take the time to keep balanced mentally and physically healthy. By helping people become aware of what their minds and bodies need in order to stay grounded.

As Grant wrote the the NYT, “Sometimes it’s a small step toward rediscovering some of the energy and enthusiasm that you’ve missed during all these months.”

What we’ve been able to accomplish at Rosewater for more than 20 years is to ensure that our clients find solace in an experience that captures their full attention. We are so pleased that we are able to offer you this opportunity again and look forward to seeing you back at the spa. We’re ready to help you on your trip back to flourishing.

Helping You Back To Flourishing With Massage

University of California, Berkeley, cites the work of neuroscientist Edmund Ross, who shares studies that show touch means safety and trust, and - it soothes.

As soon as we are given the green light from ‘the powers at be’ to re-open we will share our Covid protocols and safety measures with you. In fact, this is something that we have been working very hard on since April with additions and deletions on almost a daily basis to prepare for your return. We’ve become increasingly aware of the importance of knowing exactly what we’re eating and where it came from. Organic, farm to table, free range…we like to know that the food we ingest is healthy, wholesome, and not drenched in pesticides. We pay attention to ingredients, avoiding additives we know to be bad for us. We strive, as best we can, to nourish ourselves while steering clear of the harmful substances and practices that threaten the food industry.

Shouldn’t we be equally as particular about our makeup and hygiene products? We rub it into our pores and use it to conceal sensitive (and even sometimes irritable or inflamed) areas. Oughtn’t we to pay as much attention to our makeup ingredients as we do to the things we eat?

Jane Iredale, founder of the eponymous company, was inspired by her career in the entertainment industry to develop a line of skin-healthy makeup; again and again, she saw actors and models struggling with heavy makeups that wreaked havoc on their skin. Reacquainting Myself with the Heart of Rosewater

Each morning over the past two weeks, I have awoken with a distinct, joyous feeling of anticipation. I would open my eyes and think: “I can’t wait to go to work.”

My wonderful spa director, Amanda, has been on holidays, and so I have been working the front desk in her absence. I will admit that I wasn’t necessarily looking forward to this short stint. It would be the first time that I found myself at the front of the business in quite some time; I ordinarily operate behind the scenes, ensuring that Rosewater runs smoothly.

Almost immediately after assuming my position at our tranquil reception, however, my outlook began to change. I quickly found myself reconnecting with staff. I began to greet returning clients whom I had not seen in a while. I was able to observe daily operations from a new perspective, which allowed me fresh insight as to what systems work well for us and where there is room for improvement. Our retail grew. Our services gained traction. As I found myself having a direct impact on the business, I was reminded that my favourite part of this job has always been “driving the bus,” so to speak.

The past two weeks have been extraordinarily rewarding, and I found myself growing more excited and grateful with each passing day. The demands of the position also served as a reminder of just how hard my fabulous staff works. I have a renewed appreciation for their ability to multitask, fulfill our clients’ needs, and create a positive and warm environment that upholds the Rosewater name.

Another wonderful element of being re-immersed in the daily operations of the spa has been a renewed love for the atmosphere we have created here. From the very first day I opened Rosewater, my mantra has always been that it is absolutely integral to engage the five senses. Regardless of whether you visit for a manicure or a massage, we aim to provide a sensory experience that surpasses expectations. Rosewater is an oasis filled with soft candlelight, soothing music, and serene interiors. In our VIP Lounge you’ll find a cozy, crackling fireplace; in its adjacent subterranean steam room, visitors can relax in a sanctuary hemmed by textured, pebble-encrusted walls.

We are big believers that health and wellness is about treating the body inside and out. We don’t offer coffee or anything stimulating, aiming to create an environment of relaxation and peace. We instead offer hydration in the form of lemon water, cucumber water, and Rosewater’s signature tea, a tantalizing blend of rosehips (which are very high in antioxidants), hibiscus, and tropical fruits.

These past two weeks have also been a reminder of one of my favourite elements of Rosewater: its signature fragrance. Again and again, I have witnessed clients coming through the door after a long day of work, frustrated with parking or the general hustle and bustle of urban living. The minute they step over the threshold, the change in facial expression and physical demeanour is like a storm giving way to a sunny magic hour. The custom aromatherapy oil that we diffuse has an immediate calming effect, and you can almost see their problems temporarily evaporating.

Before I opened Rosewater, I knew that I wanted only the purest quality of essential oils. Extensive research pointed me in the direction of Eve Taylor, an herbalist from England. Taylor has made it her life’s work to source the purest oils from all over the world –– nothing is synthetic. She also sources her herbs and flowers from their indigenous regions; lavender can be grown in plenty of countries, for instance, but Taylor only uses lavender from France because the fragrant, purple flowering plant is indigenous to that country. Think of it like champagne; true champagne comes from the Champagne region of France, where the makeup of the soil and the specific grapes harvested there all contribute to the uniqueness of the fine sparkling wine. The same principles can be applied to herbs and plants.

The specific Rosewater blend we diffuse is a sensually sweet but crisp mix of Indonesian Patchouli, exotic Ylang Ylang, Mexican lime, and aromatic Damiana flowers. Taking the Waters at Rosewater

When I opened the Rosewater Spa of Oakville nearly twenty years ago, North American skin care practices were all about treatment from the neck up. The spas of this continent were very different from their European counterparts, where a much more holistic approach to skin care has been practiced not just for centuries, but millennia. I knew from the very beginning that these were principles I wanted to apply to my own spa.

What made the spas of Europe so advanced? Well, they had, of course, thousands of years to explore and refine their cultural and wellness practices. Long ago, Europeans realized that there was, as they say, something in the water. Hydrotherapy was practiced in ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations; its therapeutic qualities were also recognized in Japan, with citizens finding refuge in the waters of the country’s onsen (hot springs).

In France, the city of Vichy was first established during the Roman era when soldiers stumbled across the region’s hot mineral springs. Over the next several hundred years, the medicinal value of Vichy waters was reported far and wide, with people seeking out the city’s thermal baths to treat ailments and skin conditions.

Today the practice of using water when treating the epidermis––and the epidermis of the whole body, not just the face––has finally made its way across the Atlantic in the form of the Vichy room. The better parts of European culture tend to find their way across the pond eventually (like cappuccinos and rosé!), and now the finest spas in North America are looking to this ancient practice to create a new era of health and wellness.

Vichy rooms are admittedly still rare; Rosewater Spa of Oakville is the only spa in this city to offer one. It’s also part of what makes us a member of the Leading Spas of Canada, as members must offer a form of water treatment.

Our Vichy room (or “wet room,” as these are also sometimes called) is a serene, tiled space. Here the client reposes on a massage table beneath the Vichy shower, which is a horizontal, moving bar with thick shower heads. The therapist tuns on the shower, simulating a gentle mist or pounding waterfall –– whatever the client and treatment require. The beauty is that the client is able to remain horizontal and continue to relax while the therapist works. This is where we do mud treatments, detox treatments, and full-body exfoliation.

Our Vichy Shower Sea Salt Glow, for instance, is a 30- minute service that complements the gentle rain of the shower with mineral-rich sea salts and pure essential oils. These are massaged over the body, providing a deep and exfoliating cleanse while stimulating circulation and leaving skin soft and glowing.

We highly recommend our Vichy room for this time of year. The transition from summer to fall can be tough on the epidermis, and this 21st-century version of “taking the waters,” as they used to say, is an excellent way to remove dead skin cells, improve blood circulation, and encourage the skin to breathe. The skin is the largest organ of the body, and the myth that caring for it constitutes a topical face cream alone is not the way to keep it healthy or to combat signs of aging.

Over two thousand years ago, the people of Europe realized that one of the best medicines could be found in our most precious natural resource. Today, we here at Rosewater are applying those principles to a holistic, mindful form of treatment. There’s a brand-new ingredient making waves in the skincare industry these days, and it’s perhaps not one that many would expect. As our blog readers may remember from a recent post, Rosewater Spa of Oakville is proud to use products by Seaflora in select spa services; we also carry several of its products in our boutique. The Canadian brand is devoted to harvesting high-quality seaweed from the Salish Sea in British Columbia, infusing skincare products with the marine algae and pioneering a method of keeping it biologically active. Registered Massage Therapy at Rosewater Spa

I remember the Rosewater Spa’s first official day of business vividly. It was nineteen years ago, and the culmination of so much hard work was a sophisticated oasis ready to open its doors to the beautiful town of Oakville. Only one thing that had not fallen into place by the time I turned the key that first day: I had not yet hired a massage therapist.

My search for staff had been exhaustive. I had done plenty of research and visited all of the top massage schools in the area; a multitude of massages by students and professionals had taught me exactly the kind of person I was looking for, as well as the skillset they must possess. I also knew the sort of standard I wanted to set with Rosewater and the experience I wanted my clients to have. So far, no candidates had met the mark—but for me, compromise was not an option. And so, with time, running out, I opened the doors and kept looking.

My search had taught me some important lessons about the criteria I valued. At one school I visited, for instance, the man who would be performing my massage walked into the room and my first thought was that his physical stature was unbelievable; he was built like Charles Atlas. Personally, I love a good, deep massage, which requires strength, and so my expectations based on that first impression were high.

We shook hands. His handshake was surprisingly limp, which took me aback. The massage that followed was equally underwhelming. He applied minimal pressure throughout, which left me feeling as though my muscles hadn’t received the deep work they required. I walked away determined to find a massage therapist who understood the power of intensive treatment, who could provide thorough muscular care just as easily as a relaxing experience.

It was two weeks after opening the doors of Rosewater that I had an interview with another candidate. She was the size of a minute; if she turned sideways, she would have disappeared. My heart sank. Would this interview be yet another waste of time?

She looked me in the eye. She was warm and genuine, and her demeanour told me that she was happy to be there. And the minute I shook her hand, I knew. It was perhaps the firmest handshake I had ever encountered—full of confidence and assured strength. She was walking proof of the lesson of my search: physical strength comes in many forms.

I hired her on the spot.

Fast forward to 2019, and we currently have eight massage therapists on staff here at Rosewater. I’m proud of the team I’ve assembled. It can be immensely hard to find the right employees these days, especially given the fact that so many training schools mistakenly give spas a bad reputation. Again and again I encounter students who graduate with the belief that spas are beneath their healing hands, who choose instead to seek out work in clinics. However, the great thing about Rosewater is that our clientele is varied; I would say that between 50–60% of our client base is dealing with medical issues, whereas others are simply looking for a relaxing experience. This wide range means that our massage therapists are highly versatile.

While most clinics these days tend to offer just deep tissue and Swedish massages, Rosewater strives to offer more choices to suit very different needs. Our hot stone therapy uses heated basalt stones (a form of volcanic rock) to loosen tight muscles and make it easier for our massage therapists to offer deep treatment. Our Thalassotherapy massage, which we recommend for clients with arthritis and chronic pain, uses an organic seaweed known as Seaflora. This gel, which is mixed with our massage lotion, contains essential vitamins and minerals which the body absorbs. The goal of Thalassotherapy is to detoxify the body while relaxing sore muscles, decreasing inflammation, and improving circulation.

Other options here at Rosewater include Swedish, Aromatherapy, Reflexology, and Deep Tissue. We are also happy to offer a Pre-Natal massage, which is performed with a pregnancy pillow to make expectant mothers as comfortable as possible. All of our massages come with a complimentary steam, which we can’t recommend highly enough; a trip to our steam room before the service warms the muscle tissues and allows our massage therapists deeper access to problematic areas.

Rosewater is also proud to offer a VIP suite, where couples can receive their massages side-by-side near a cozy fireplace. Adjacent to this room is a beautiful private grotto, its subterranean walls comprised of stone pebbles. This space functions as a eucalyptus steam room, which not only prepares the body for massage, but also creates a soothing, earthy environment in which to relax.

Most of our massages are provided in either 50-minute or 80-minute sessions, and it’s remarkable how many of our returning customers opt for 80 minutes.

My favourite part of this job is working the front desk and cashing out clients. The change from when they walk through the door to when they leave is palpable; after their massages, they are visibly happy and relaxed. In the 1920s, fashion designer and international trendsetter Coco Chanel was photographed by paparazzi upon her return from a Mediterranean cruise. The ordinarily alabaster beauty had accidentally fallen asleep on a yacht, and the dazzling sun over the French Riviera had given her a decidedly tawny glow. Culturally, at this time, a tan was considered a mark of the working class; pale skin told of a leisurely, privileged existence –– one lived primarily indoors. Chanel’s blunder caused a sensation around the Western world, changing beauty standards and our relationship with the sun. We now crave those clear, dewy, sun-kissed complexions that we’re told an afternoon at the park or beach will bring.

We know by now, of course, that too much sun comes with dangers. Otherwise, we tend not to think of summer as a problem season for skin –– it’s a far cry from the dryness and dullness of January, after all. Summer, however, comes with its own unique threats to the epidermis. The heat can leave a rosy glow, but it also opens our pores, leaving them susceptible to blockages as toxins in the air, perspiration, oils, and product residues (especially sunscreens) wreak their own kind of havoc.

Deep in these dog days of summer, it’s important to show our skin the attention it so badly needs, and one of the best ways to do so is with a high-quality mask. We work hard to curate our retail products here at Rosewater, stocking our boutique strictly with products we believe in. Our newest addition is a line of masks known as MAGICSTRIPES, and yes, we believe in them. When I invited several members of my staff to try the product for themselves on a recent Saturday, they raved about the results. (So much so that we ended up selling several masks that day to clients who were visiting our spa for non-skincare-related services!)

MAGICSTRIPES is a German brand with an A-List origin story. Natalie Franz, a celebrity makeup artist with names like Lady GaGa and Taylor Swift on her resume, discovered a new kind of skincare product while travelling in Japan. Known as “stripes,” these tiny, invisible patches worked to rejuvenate the skin with impressive results. Franz decided to introduce this method to the Western world, and in 2013, MAGICSTRIPES was born.

I specifically chose this brand for its superior ingredients. Simply put, these are not your drugstore masks; ingredients have been carefully curated for their unparalleled quality and proven health benefits. We currently stock four different products from the line: the Magnetic Youth Mask, the Hyaluronic Intensive Treatment Mask, the Deep Detox Tightening Mask, and the Wake Me Up Collagen Eye Patches.

The Magnetic Youth Mask uses the unique properties of magnets to accelerate the circulation of blood and fluids in and on the skin. These integrated magnets work in tandem with hydrolyzed collagen to improve skin elasticity, hyaluronic acid to promote the creation of a healthy skin barrier, and antioxidant-packed aloe barbadensis leaf juice. This lightweight sheet mask ultimately works to slow the skin’s natural aging process.

Its pore-minimizing properties and soothing, regenerative ingredients like macadamia nut oil and apricot kernel oil make it ideal for our heat-weary complexions. Where did the business name ‘Rosewater’ come from?

As we approach our 19th year in business in downtown Oakville and continue to ‘spa on’ into our 20th year I thought our readers might be interested or curious about knowing the origins and derivation of our company’s name.

20+ years ago, in the preliminary stage of writing my business plan it became crystal clear to me that in order to be a credible and authentic spa there had to be some type of water therapies in our offerings that would play an integral role in our services. I needed that word ‘water’ in the name.

At the same time we have seen a proliferation of spas that have popped up everywhere so it was important to differentiate ourselves from the pack.

Through a process of elimination I came upon the words ‘rose water’ which has been used since ancient times as an astringent in skin care, in nutrition and as a source of perfume. The actual process of making rose water is through steam distillation.

As soon as I said the word ‘rose water’ out loud I fell in love with this name and at that point my business plan took flight and the name became ‘Rosewater Spa of Oakville.’
